Vertical platform wheelchair lift installed at an accessible entrance

A Wheelchair Lift Designed Around Your Property

Vertical platform lifts—also called VPLs, wheelchair lifts or porch lifts—carry a person and their mobility device between accessible landings. They are often considered for a raised porch, deck, garage entrance or interior level change. A VPL can be especially useful when the required rise would make a wheelchair ramp too long for the available property.

Platform size, mobility-device dimensions, entry direction, landing clearances, weather exposure, power and surrounding construction all affect the design. We review these factors before recommending equipment.

Vertical Platform Lift Options We Install

Mobility Solutions – R.C.I. offers Savaria VPL options and selects each system around the person, mobility device and site. Two options are the Savaria V-1504 and Savaria Multilift.

Savaria V-1504

The Savaria V-1504 is a hydraulic vertical platform lift designed for residential and eligible commercial applications. Its drive equipment is contained within the attached tower, so it does not require a separate machine room. Savaria offers multiple entry and exit arrangements, gate and door packages, factory-built enclosures and hoistway configurations.

Savaria lists the V-1504 with a 750-pound capacity in its standard configuration. Platform dimensions, travel, entry arrangement, enclosure and controls must be selected for the property and intended use. Its available configurations make the V-1504 an option for projects ranging from porch access to more involved interior or multi-landing designs.

Savaria Multilift

The Savaria Multilift is a two-stop vertical platform lift designed primarily for short-rise access. It is commonly considered for porches, decks and garages, indoors or outdoors. Its ACME screw drive and mechanical components are housed in the lift tower, and Savaria lists a 750-pound capacity for the current model.

Standard, enclosed and mobile Multilift configurations may be available. Product availability, travel, platform size and suitability for public use vary by configuration, region and local requirements, so we confirm the correct version during project planning.

Complete VPL Planning, Site Preparation and Installation

The lift is only one part of a successful wheelchair-lift project. A stable foundation, usable approaches, dependable power and properly prepared landings all influence the finished system. Mobility Solutions – R.C.I. combines mobility-equipment experience with the construction capabilities of R.C.I. General Contracting to help coordinate the complete scope.

On-Site Evaluation

We begin by understanding who will use the lift, the mobility device involved and which levels must connect. The evaluation may include:

  • Total vertical rise and number of landings
  • Wheelchair, power-chair or scooter dimensions
  • Platform size and weight-capacity needs
  • Straight-through, 90-degree or same-side access
  • Upper- and lower-landing clearances
  • Doors, gates, handrails and approach paths
  • Indoor or outdoor exposure, drainage, snow and ice
  • Available electrical service
  • Existing porch, deck, wall and foundation conditions
  • Project-specific permit, inspection and approval requirements

Foundation and Construction Coordination

Site preparation may include a concrete pad or pit, drainage work, a structural support wall, anchorage, landing modifications, deck or porch reconstruction, electrical work, gate or door preparation and a finished approach to the platform. Our construction background helps us identify those needs early and coordinate applicable concrete, carpentry, structural and electrical work with the equipment installation.

When engineering, permits, inspections or outside approvals apply, we identify them as project dependencies before installation is scheduled. Responsibility for obtaining them is defined in the written proposal. The selected manufacturer’s planning documents and site conditions guide the final preparation requirements.

Installation, Testing and Handoff

Once the site is ready and the specified equipment is available, we install and anchor the lift, complete the equipment connections within our scope, verify gate and landing operation, test the system and review proper use with the customer or caregiver. Timing varies with the product, site work, availability and approval process; the project proposal identifies the planned sequence and included work.

Vertical Platform Lift Service After Installation

Accessibility equipment should have support beyond installation day. Mobility Solutions – R.C.I. provides ongoing VPL maintenance and repair, and we can evaluate existing wheelchair lifts installed by another provider. Serviceability depends on the manufacturer, model, condition and availability of compatible parts.

If an existing unit is not operating correctly, visit our vertical platform lift repair page or call (570) 980-2561 with the manufacturer, model and serial number when available.

Compare Related Accessibility Options

Not sure which entrance solution fits? Compare a wheelchair ramp with a porch lift, including space, user needs, site preparation and upkeep.

A VPL is not the right answer for every property. We also provide aluminum wheelchair ramp sales and installation for entrances where a properly planned ramp fits the site, and stairlift sales and installation for people who can transfer to a stairlift seat. The assessment should determine the solution—not the other way around. Use our Wheelchair Ramp Length Guide to understand how rise, slope, runs and landings affect a ramp layout.

Vertical Platform Lift FAQs

  • Is a vertical platform lift the same as a wheelchair lift or porch lift?

In this context, yes. These terms commonly describe a platform that carries a person and mobility device vertically between accessible landings. Vehicle-mounted wheelchair lifts are a different product category and are not the focus of this service.

  • Is a VPL better than a wheelchair ramp?

It depends on the rise, available space, user and property. A ramp may be the simplest choice at some entrances. As the rise increases, the required ramp and landing system can occupy substantial space. A VPL may provide a more compact route when the site cannot comfortably accommodate that footprint.

  • Can a vertical platform lift be installed outdoors?

Yes, certain models and configurations are designed for outdoor use. Weather exposure, drainage, snow management, electrical components, landing protection and enclosure options must be considered during planning.

  • Does a VPL require a concrete pad or pit?

Many installations require a properly prepared concrete foundation. Some configurations use a shallow pit for level entry, while others use an access ramp to reach the platform. The manufacturer’s planning documents and site conditions determine the required preparation.

  • Are vertical platform lifts available for commercial properties?

Yes, certain models and packages are intended for qualifying public or commercial applications. Those projects can require different platform dimensions, gates or doors, controls, communication features, drawings, permits and inspections than a residential installation.

  • How long does wheelchair-lift installation take?

There is no universal timeline. Equipment lead time, concrete and construction work, engineering, permitting, inspections, weather and the selected configuration can all affect the schedule. We provide a project-specific sequence after evaluating the property.

  • How much does a vertical platform lift cost?

Price depends on travel, platform size, landings, entry configuration, gates or doors, enclosure, backup options, site preparation, construction and approval requirements. An on-site assessment is the best way to develop an accurate proposal.

  • Can you repair a lift you did not install?

We can evaluate many existing vertical platform lifts, including equipment installed by another provider. Repair depends on the model, condition, safe access to the equipment and parts availability. Providing the manufacturer, model and serial number before the visit helps us prepare.
